| THE ARTIST ONE YEAR BEFORE 40 |
[Jul. 17th, 2009|06:12 pm] |
I'll likely do one of them strange retrospectives most people do when they hit a "significant" age number like 40 next year, but I'll do a brief one now. So, 39. Huh. Feels like 38. Same problems, same life, same everything. Weird to think it's been twenty years since I was accepted into Sheridan College's "Art Fundamentals" program as I began my misguided pursuit of Animation as a career choice, and I say that with no irony. It was misguided, considering just how plain awful I was back then. I could see the college money counters laughing as they took my cheque knowing there was no way in Hell I'd see the school a year later for Animation. I continued to soldier on though, knocking out a plethora of mini comics featuring my superhero spoof character PowerWus, then moving on to the now fairly comfortable autobio genre in my perhaps equally misguided cartooning career. I've done some great books I feel, and hope to have a slew of books to come, some way, somehow. 39 is just a number, right? It's what you do in life that makes the mark, I suppose, and if I've affected any of you in some positive way through my comics or through my being in your lives, then maybe I've done some of whatever it is we feel we need to do on this improbable mudball with breathable atmosphere. Thanks to all who wished me a happy birthday. it means a lot, believe me. |

| OCC Signing Tomorrow! |
[Jul. 17th, 2009|02:01 pm] |
Just a reminder that I'll be signing at Olympic Cards and Comics in Lacey, WA, tomorrow, from noon until roughly five pm. Ostensibly, this is a Detective Comics signing, but a visit to OCC is always more than that -- and I understand Gabi's come up with some goodies for the event!
Hope to see (some) of you there! |

| Sketchbooks and things |
[Jul. 17th, 2009|10:19 am] |
Sometimes when I'm looking for inspiration, I flip through my old sketchbooks. Occasionally I find something that catches my eye in a new way. I found this while flipping through one from several years ago. I remember liking it when I did it, and then being somewhat eh about it. But for some reason, it really captured me when I looked at it again so I decided to scan it and touch it up/photoshop out the page crease so I could potentially make a small print of it. I did this in my moleskine after I got a cheap set of oil paints. I was just starting to play around with incorporating collage into paintings/drawings at that time. Maybe I should try playing around some more with oils. I've been on a gouache/acrylic/watercolor kick lately... but maybe after I move (into a new loft with space for me to have a dedicated studio!) I should pick back up the oils again (from the bottom of my box of paints) and work on a larger panel or something.

| New Comic! |
[Jul. 16th, 2009|06:57 pm] |
Finished up the last page of a 3 page new comic today on my website.
Here's page one. Clicking on it will take you to the beginning of the three pages on my website where you can see the rest:

In other news, today was hot. I'm hoping the rain hurries up so it'll cool back down to around 80 soon. 80 I'm fine with. 88... a little too sweaty for me. |

I was just helping Scarlett Johanssen look for her contact lens. Apparently she's in the next Iron Man movie... |

All times and locations are subject to the vagaries of con-ness. If I am not where I am supposed to be when I'm supposed to be, I beg patience; negotiating the floor and the hall can be a bitch-and-a-half, and getting from Point A to Point B through an ocean of humanity often takes more time than I'd like.
I will attempt to keep this blog, and my website, updated as to any changes.
Now, then...I promised some Cully goodness a couple days back.
( I aim to deliver. )
Enjoy! |

| Gaze upon my works, o ye mighty, and snicker. Part 34. |
[Jul. 15th, 2009|03:33 pm] |

A few days ago, I mused out loud on Twitter about creating a new blog in which I drew a different fictional character- comics, literature, movies, whatever- a day and posted it. Thought it might help me exercise my atrophied drawing muscles. I got several excellent suggestions about who I could draw. Now, while I'm not quite ready yet to create yet another blog to let lie fallow, I am still using this one as sort of a sketch blog these days, and today, when I took a break from typesetting church programs, I drew one of the requests- the Phantom Stranger. Now, this isn't the classic 70's Stranger, with his swingin' medallion and turtleneck shirt, nor is it the Guy Davis-inspired Vertigo Hobo looking Stranger either. I thought it might be fun to run a newspaper to draw him as he was in his earliest appearances; when he wore a trenchcoat and tie, before Neal Adams redesigned his look. And don't get me wrong, it's a fine look that no one's really improved on 30 + years later, but I wanted to do him up all different-like. And here he is. |

| But wait, there's MORE! |
[Jul. 14th, 2009|10:28 am] |
The last of the Detective 854 signings is this Saturday at Olympic Cards and Comics, in Lacey, WA, from noon to five. My favorite store in the WHOLE wide world, even if it happens to be the terrain marked by my partner in many crimes, Eric Trautmann.
Take a look at this:

Yes, that's right! A Stumptown t-shirt! Matthew Southworth and I will be giving away 50 of them as a promotion at the Oni Press panel on Thursday at the con. Perfect for the cynic, romantic, or dogged PI in your life! |
